As midfielders, forwards and centre backs, each of them have created thousands of unforgettable moments on the pitch. Fans have sung their names over the years, and now Malaysian football-lovers will have a chance to do a lot more with these four football heroes.

In its second season as the Official Beer Partner of the BPL, Carlsberg is pulling out all the stops and bringing these legends to Malaysian soil. Want to debate the current state of the BPL teams with them, or listen as they reminisce about their playing days? Take part in Carlsberg’s consumer promotion from now till October 31, and you just may get to rub shoulders with these lords of the ball at Carlsberg’s Ultimate Football Retreat.

And what a retreat it is set to be. You have the timeless Dennis Wise who spent more than half of his two-decade football career with Chelsea, becoming the club’s top scorer in the 1991/92 season with 14 goals from midfield. Wise is one of the football club’s most successful captains, having led them to winning two FA Cups, a UEFA Cup and even the Football League Cup during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Then there’s Gianfranco Zola, who played alongside Wise at Chelsea, and has become a true legend especially amongst the Blues’ fans. Zola was the very first Chelsea player to win the English Footballer of the Year award, and the only player to win the award without having played a full season in the BPL. In his relatively short five-year BPL career with Chelsea, Zola played over 300 games and scored 80 goals, and was well-deservedly voted Chelsea’s best ever player by fans in 2003.

The third lord of the ball, Steve McManaman, spent most of his BPL career with Liverpool and in those nine years, made a name for himself as one of the greatest midfield playmakers in league history. He was well known as a talismanic player capable of bringing entire stadiums to their feet with the mere possession of the ball, with many fans regarding him as one of two players who carried the Reds through the 1990s. McManaman is the most decorated English footballer to have played abroad, winning the UEFA Champions League and Spanish La Liga twice.

Completing this legendary line-up is Sol Campbell. This former Arsenal captain was part of The Invincibles, the undefeated Arsenal side of the BPL 2003/04 season. In his five years with the Gunners, he has twice won the BPL and the FA cup, including the 2001/02 BPL and FA cup double. As the second youngest English captain in history at 23 years of age, Campbell is also the only player to have represented England in six consecutive major tournament.

According to Juliet Yap, Marketing Director of Carlsberg Malaysia, the brand is taking the BPL experience to a new level in Malaysia with this dream group of pitch masters.

She commented: “This will not be a quick meet and greet session. It will be a rare bonding opportunity where our campaign winners and their friends will get to chat with bona fide BPL legends, challenge them to fun football-games and then catch and debate the matches lined up for the evening. The retreat is about seeing friends and legends immersed in a football experience like no other, while sharing in the camaraderie over ice-cold Carlsberg. It’s the ultimate experience fans usually only fantasise about.”

Carlsberg’s 2-day 1-night Ultimate Football Retreat will be hosted at Avani Sepang Gold Coast Resort on November 22 to 23, where winners of the campaign will get to bring along three of their football-mad friends to spend quality time with the football stars.
